To quote Chicago press at the time - money talks but you cant make it sing. From Polish teenager in the early part of the 20th century, she became a pre-revolutionary baroness in the Russian court- with five subsequent husbands including American industrial royalty, Harold McCormick, head of International Harvester. She was reputed to be the inspiration for the second wife in Orson Welles film Citizen Kane - the inept prima donna - yet her creativity fully blossomed in the making of this extraordinary garden estate. Her life embraces many important events of the 20th century and the artists, tycoons and statesmen at center stage. She also made a significant contribution to French cultural life as owner of the Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris for more than 40 years. This earned her both the Légion dhonneur in 1934 and the Ordre National des Arts et des Lettres in 1972.
