On the journey, Hannahs mother is crippled in an accident. Unable to continue to Oregon, the family establishes a farm near the small settlement of Canvasback Creek, in the Nebraska Territory, close to the Platte River. In 1858, tragedy strikes when Hannahs father dies from consumption and her mother and two brothers from Cholera. While nursing her sister, Emily, through the sickness, Hannah discovers a tin box her mother hid in their cabin. The box contains many surprises with the biggest being a letter containing information that will change Hannah and her sisters lives forever. Hannah decides they will have to travel to Boston but, before they can leave, she must fight off a woman and her two sons intent on stealing everything they own and burning the two girls alive in their cabin. Soon after, Emily is captured by evil Comancheros who want to sell her as a slave to the Comanche Indians. Hannah has only a short time to rescue Emily before she is lost forever.
